Larry Joe Bird, nicknamed “the Hick from French Lick” is considered to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He is the only person in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA) to be named Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, Finals MVP, All-Star MVP, Coach of the Year, and Executive of the Year. Bird entered the NBA for the 1979-1980 season and made an instant impact. He could play both inside and outside and his shooting and passing skills are legendary. Despite his fame and fortune, Bird was content with the simple lifestyle of his youth. He often said that having the basics was enough and as long as he had the essentials, he could live a happy and satisfying life. Luxury cars, fancy clothes, and ego-building admirers meant little to Bird. A small town perspective has allowed one of the all-time greats to stay humble.

The Apostle Paul has been called the greatest evangelist in history. Paul however, knew who he was and what he was capable of. He understood that left to himself, he could also become one of the greatest sinners in history. Before his conversion to Christianity, Paul had committed himself to the persecution of the early followers of Jesus. Following his “Damascus Road” experience, Paul’s life took a complete turn. He traveled throughout the Roman Empire spreading the “good news” that Jesus would soon return. Despite being considered one of the most influential figures in the early Church, Paul never forgot where he came from. He had been chosen by God because of his weakness. Paul knew that it was only through God’s great mercy and patience that he was being used. The more he matured in the faith, the more humble he became.

Heavenly Father, keep me humble today. Help me to take my eyes off of myself and to place them on You. Thank you for Your continued mercy and patience in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
