“I am the gate. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.
– John 10:9-10
One of the driving questions of human existence is, “Who am I?” This question is one of identity , and the answer becomes the cornerstone upon which all else is built. There are multiple levels to that question. If you were to answer, “I am a mom, dad, wife, husband, brother, plumber, teacher, coach…” those would certainly be legitimate answers; however, all those aspects of our identities cannot become the core of who we are. When we align ourselves with God and what God has to say, it’s a little easier to answer the question of who we are becoming. In 2 Corinthians 5:17-21, we read about where our identity comes from: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away and see, the new has come.” “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us.”
The challenge for Christ-followers is to be on guard against allowing what we do to replace who are whose we are. God’s original design was for our doing to flow from our being. The subtle lie of the enemy and the temptation of our sinful natures is to reverse that design. For Christ-centered coaches, everything comes into alignment when our role as a coach becomes rightly related to our identity as a child of God. The journey of becoming a Kingdom coach is a life-long pursuit of coming back repeatedly to the reality of our core identity as a son or daughter of the King of Kings—Jesus Christ.
Lord, help me always remember who I am based upon whose I am. I am a child of the King! May all I do flow out of this reality. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
