Coach’s Mandate
Pray as though nothing of eternal value is going to happen in my athletes’ lives unless God does it. Prepare each practice and game, giving my utmost for His highest. Seek not to be served by my athletes for personal gain, but serve them as Christ served the church.
Under Control
"A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls." - Proverbs 25:28 (ESV) As a high school student, I kept the shot chart for the varsity basketball coach. This required me to sit next to him on the bench during each game. He did a...
Walking Straight
"Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth...." - Psalm 86:11 (ESV) If I had a dollar for every line I've painted on an athletic field, I'd be a wealthy man! Preparing a field for competition is an art and it also requires having the right...
What Did You Say?
"Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!" - Psalm 141:3 (ESV) C.J. Stroud was taken as the second-round pick of the Houston Texans in the 2023 NFL Draft. He went on to be chosen as the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year finishing the...
The Power of Fellowship
"And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." - Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV) Sports can be an excellent...
A Worthy Example
"For I have given you an example that you also should do just as I have done to you." - John 13:15 (ESV) "I hope when people think of their interactions with me, they first think of Jesus." These words spoken by long-time National Football League (NFL) wide...
Taking a Stand
"Shadrach, Meshack, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand O King. But...
The Power of Patience
“Better is the end of a thing than its beginning, and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.” – Ecclesiastes 7:8 (ESV) In the world of athletics, patience is a powerful weapon. Experienced coaches know this, but rarely do we talk with our...
Trust What He’s Doing
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” – Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV) Many of us are big planners. We want to know what the future holds so we can plan our...
True Success
“His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’” – Matthew 25:21 (ESV) In coaching and life, our perspective on success often changes as we mature....
Unpredictable
“Your eyes saw my unformed substance, in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. – Psalm 139:16 (ESV) Life is precious! We were reminded of that in 2016 with the tragic death of Miami Marlin...
View From the Press Box
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” – Isaiah 55:8-9 (ESV) Sometimes we’re too close to a...

New Devotion by Charles Gee
All coaches understand the call to “Huddle Up.” Though not everyone coaches on the field, court, or diamond, most of us gather to share ideas, address challenges, or plan strategies. In the corporate world, it’s a staff meeting. In the military, a briefing. When parents want to clear the air, it’s a family conference. We’re all coaching in some way, and there will always be a time to “Huddle Up.”
The Christ- centered principles in these studies help coaches and competitors reconnect, refocus, and reboot to meet daily challenges.
Charles Gee is Chaplain for the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association and has served with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for over 15 years. Drawing from personal coaching experiences, he writes weekly devotions encouraging coaches to use their platform to impact lives for Jesus Christ (scfcacoaches.org). A retired Master Sergeant from the U.S. Army Reserves, Charles lives in Mt. Pleasant, SC, with Kathy, his wife of 52 years. He has two sons, Jeff and Chris, two daughters- in-law, Kristin and Megan, and three amazing, competitive grandchildren.
