Perspective

“So if you have been raised with the Messiah, seek what is above,
where the Messiah is, seated at the right hand of God.
Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on the earth.”
– Colossians 3:1-2

It was a typical conversation between two coaches. Following a very one-sided football scrimmage, one coach asked the other, “Are we that good or are they that bad?” I had to laugh when I saw them look at each other and answer at the same time, “It’s probably a little of both!” In athletics and in life, we walk a slippery slope. When things are going well, we usually give ourselves too much credit and when things are going bad, we often assume too much of the blame. Keeping the proper perspective in our lives can be very difficult.

The Apostle Paul addresses our battle with perspective in the book of Colossians. As followers of Jesus Christ, how do we develop a heavenly perspective while continuing to live in this crazy, mixed-up world? We have taken the faith plunge and are learning a new way of life and a new way of thinking. But guess what? It’s hard to live with your feet and head in different places. A.T. Robinson says that “the Christian is seeking heaven and thinking heaven. His feet are on the earth, but his head is with the stars. He is living like a citizen of heaven here on earth.” Jesus says there is a much bigger game taking place than the one we see on earth. This is not a task for the weak at heart. It takes hard work and discipline. We do it one day at the time. We keep looking up and striving to stay focused on the heavenly perspective.

Lord Jesus, teach me to see through Your eyes. Give me a heavenly perspective and help me to live it out each and every day. In Jesus name, Amen.
