“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
– Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV)
Sports can be an excellent way to connect with others in a common purpose. Participation in sports often proves the point that we need each other in order to be our best. Athletes love to eat, and in my experience something amazing happens when teammates eat and fellowship together. As teammates gather together, these times often become an opportunity for revealing individual weaknesses and building team unity. The pace is not as hurried. There is a give and take as questions are asked and answered in a relaxed atmosphere. The greatest benefit of all may be that a true sense of community is often established.
As with sports, the same results often happen in our relationship with Jesus. We tend to grow stronger and deeper in our faith when we do it in fellowship with one another. Surely, this is why the early followers of Jesus were committed to being together. The center of this togetherness was not a stage, entertainment or a building. It was a table! It was through shared meals that they became vulnerable and revealed their helplessness. Masks came off as the need for Jesus and each other became a realization. Our present-day society has become lonely and isolated. We need to rekindle ways to do life together. We need to seek opportunities to establish community. Our God is a great God! He can change lives through the simple act of sitting together around a table.
Heavenly Father, I am helpless when I am alone. I need You and I need others. Create opportunities today for me to fellowship with other believers. Help me to establish and grow community within my sphere of influence. It’s in Jesus name I pray, Amen.
