Be the Light

June 27, 2022

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
– Matthew 5:14 (ESV)

Have you ever been to an evening athletic event? Sure, you have! It may be difficult for many to comprehend, but before the advent of stadium lights, games were played only during daylight hours. In fact, Major League baseball’s Chicago Cubs didn’t install stadium lights at Wrigley Field until 1988. Playing night games has become increasingly popular over the years mainly because it has generated a significant spike in attendance. Nights games have allowed families to attend games without mom or dad having to take time off from work or getting the kids out of school. Lighted stadiums have brought increased attendance, increased revenue and on the negative side, the increased presence of bugs and flying insects! I’ve heard it said, “Where there’s light, there’s bugs.” Certainly, that’s true when the stadium lights are turned on. Light attracts bugs of all kinds, and they can create unwanted distractions. The best way to handle the bugs is to put on a little repellent and keep playing.

Jesus calls each of His disciples to be a light in a dark world. As Jesus followers, we are called to live in such a way that would model the life of Jesus and bring glory to God. Our light should be a reflection of Jesus and that reflection should be visible for miles. If you’re driving to a stadium, but don’t have directions, you look for the lights on the horizon. The lights can’t be hidden and the glow will guide you safely to your destination. As “lights of the world”, disciples of Jesus are called to help others navigate the darkness. Now, let’s talk about the bugs again! As “lights of the world”, disciples of Jesus are going to attract their fair share of bugs too. We will be distracted, annoyed, and aggravated by the bugs that fly around our lives and our ministry. Modeling the live of Jesus and growing a successful ministry will always attract critics. The best way to handle the bugs is to arm yourself with God’s word and keep shining!

Lord, help me to be a light that shines for You. When the bugs come, give me the strength to keep shining. Amen.
