Champion or Chump?

March 3, 2025

“I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.”
– Philippians 4:12 (ESV)

The line between being a champion or a chump can be very thin. In the span of one game, a coach can quickly go from being a genius to a complete idiot. We often think the team that just won a big game will never lose again. Likewise, we often think the team that just fell apart is a bunch of losers and will never win again. The coaching roller coaster often takes us on an unpredictable ride and we have to be well grounded to keep things in the proper perspective. Here is a truth for you. It seldom is as good as it seems, nor as bad. Coaches will experience times of plenty as well as times of scarcity. Some years we have great talent, and other years we have little. The struggle for coaches is finding contentment in our process.

What does the Bible say about finding contentment? The Apostle Paul reminds us there is a secret to being content and that secret is staying strong in Jesus. Contentment is the key in our witness for Jesus. How credible will our testimony be if we are only happy and content when things are going our way? Contentment with our situation in life reflects our faith and trust in Jesus Christ. If we continue reading Philippians 4:13, it says, “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” That strength is available in the good times and the bad. The great news is God continues to walk with us and stand with us regardless of what the world may think or say about us.

Lord God, help me to be content in all that You provide. May I trust in You and the plan You have for my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
