Small Stuff

"Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him." - Genesis 6:22 (ESV) I have been a baseball fan since I was eight years old. The game has everything a kid would love—running, sliding, catching, and throwing. The game is magical to me, and I am amazed that after...

Hi Mom

"She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue." - Proverbs 31:26 (ESV) Hi Mom! I'm thinking about you today, but the truth is, I think about you every day. I know every little boy didn't have a mom like you, but I sure wish they...

Will You Be Ready?

"But Moses said to God, 'Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?'" - Exodus 3:11 (ESV) Sports and life are filled with opportunity. The most amazing thing about opportunity is that you often do not see it coming. A perfect...
Day By Day

Day By Day

“Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens." – Psalms 68:19 There are no shortcuts in the arena of sports. Coaches and athletes learn quickly that high expectations and the lack of daily effort are a recipe for failure. One of the great lessons of sport is that it takes a daily commitment to get better.

Home Field Advantage

Home Field Advantage

These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” – Deuteronomy 6:6-8 I have always had a fascination with baseball parks.

Weakness

Weakness

“My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9 Our lives can change in an instant!  For the people of Huntington, West Virginia, that happened on Saturday, November 14, 1970. The Marshall University football team, returning from a 17-14 loss to East Carolina University, was tragically killed in an airplane crash described as “the worst in sports history”. Seventy-five people lost their lives that night including players, coaches, staff, boosters a...

The X's and O's

The X's and O's

(Dedicated to Clemson Head Football Coach Dabo Swinney – 2014 Grant Teaff Coach of the Year and Coach Art Baker – 2014 Grant Teaff Lifetime Achievement Award) “And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, commit to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” – 2 Timothy 2:2 Who can’t remember those childhood days when the neighborhood kids got together for a backyard game of football. We divided into teams, decided who would play what position and the...

Team Meeting

Team Meeting

“Woe to you experts in the law! You have taken away the key to knowledge! You didn’t go in yourselves, and you hindered those who were going in.” – Luke 11:52 We all know about the “team meeting”.

Family

Family

“Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.” – Psalm 127:1 Let’s face it, being a coach on any level is hard on the family life. As coaches, we’re pulled away from our homes and families a great deal. The profession requires us to study film, prepare practice schedules, speak to outside groups in addition to just trying to put a quality product on the field or court.

New Beginnings

New Beginnings

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17 As we begin another new year, I find myself thinking of the many opportunities we as coaches have to start fresh. Each season brings new players, new chemistry, new goals, and new experiences. No matter how long we have been coaching, there is something that stirs in us as new seasons approach.

The Greatest Coach

The Greatest Coach

“Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also the interests of others.” – Philippians 2:4     John Wooden is one of the greatest coaches of all time and my personal favorite. Even though Coach Wooden is no longer with us, his values and character live on in the lives of those he influenced. That’s what is called leaving a legacy.

Joy to the World

Joy to the World

“You become imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.” – 1 Thessalonians 1:6   Over the past week I have been reminded while Christmas is a time of great happiness and anticipation, it can also be a time of sadness and dread. Everywhere around us are the sights and sounds of Christmas. Homes are decorated inside and out and songs of the season serenade us in the stores and in our cars.

Joy

Joy

“I delight in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God.” – Isaiah 61:10a I have experienced many joys during my years of coaching. Being part of a state championship football team, winning region titles and celebrating victories over major rivals are but a few of my joyful memories. Seeing great effort and hard work bear fruit has been a joy.

Transformed

Transformed

“Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice , holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship.  Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is good, pleasing, and the perfect will of God.” – Romans 12:1-2   One of the joys of coaching is watching young players grow and mature.  A skinny and awkward 15-year old can come back from a summer vacation loo...

New Devotion by Charles Gee

All coaches understand the call to “Huddle Up.” Though not everyone coaches on the field, court, or diamond, most of us gather to share ideas, address challenges, or plan strategies. In the corporate world, it’s a staff meeting. In the military, a briefing. When parents want to clear the air, it’s a family conference. We’re all coaching in some way, and there will always be a time to “Huddle Up.”

The Christ- centered principles in these studies help coaches and competitors reconnect, refocus, and reboot to meet daily challenges.

Charles Gee is Chaplain for the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association and has served with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for over 15 years. Drawing from personal coaching experiences, he writes weekly devotions encouraging coaches to use their platform to impact lives for Jesus Christ (scfcacoaches.org). A retired Master Sergeant from the U.S. Army Reserves, Charles lives in Mt. Pleasant, SC, with Kathy, his wife of 52 years. He has two sons, Jeff and Chris, two daughters- in-law, Kristin and Megan, and three amazing, competitive grandchildren.
