Small Stuff

"Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him." - Genesis 6:22 (ESV) I have been a baseball fan since I was eight years old. The game has everything a kid would love—running, sliding, catching, and throwing. The game is magical to me, and I am amazed that after...

Hi Mom

"She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue." - Proverbs 31:26 (ESV) Hi Mom! I'm thinking about you today, but the truth is, I think about you every day. I know every little boy didn't have a mom like you, but I sure wish they...

Will You Be Ready?

"But Moses said to God, 'Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?'" - Exodus 3:11 (ESV) Sports and life are filled with opportunity. The most amazing thing about opportunity is that you often do not see it coming. A perfect...
Watch Your Mouth

Watch Your Mouth

“There is one who speaks rashly, like a piercing sword; but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” – Proverbs 12:18 Words are powerful, they have the power to build up or tear down. As coaches, the words we use to communicate with others say a great deal about our own character. Steve Alford played basketball under the legendary Bobby Knight at Indiana University.

A radical approach!

A radical approach!

“Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed, by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.” – Romans 12:2 Dick Fosbury turned the track and field world on its ear during the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. For the first time, millions of viewers watched in amazement as the high jump technique known as the “Fosbury Flop” was unveiled. Using his back-first method, Fosbury won the gold medal in dramatic fashion with a jump of 7 fee...

What are you thinking?

What are you thinking?

“For as he thinks within himself, so he is.” – Proverbs 23:7 Every action, whether bad or good, begins as a simple thought. Coaches are busy! Most of us are so busy that we don’t take the time to stop and really think through our actions.

Warriors

Warriors

“They attack as warriors; they scale walls as men of war. Each man proceeds on his own path, and they do not change their course.” – Joel 2:7 When I think of warriors, usually images of Mel Gibson in Braveheart or Russell Crowe in Gladiator come to mind. In these characters we see courage, conviction and a sense of purpose that is larger than life.

How awesome is this place!

How awesome is this place!

He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place!  This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.” – Genesis 28:17 Have you ever wondered what heaven is like?  To a golfer, the closest thing to heaven must be the crown jewel of all golf courses—Augusta National.  Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts created a golf environment unlike any other in the world.  There is something about Augusta National that moves people in profound ways.  Its breathtakin...

Anger

Anger

“Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.” – Colossians 4:6 Have you ever been guilty of shooting off your mouth before you put your brain in gear? In a recent college baseball game, I watched the head coach get tossed for arguing balls and strikes with the home plate umpire. Not only was he thrown out of the game, he was forced to leave the dugout and the stadium in full view of those in attendance.

New Beginnings

New Beginnings

Brothers, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Jesus Christ. – Philippians 3:13-14 (Holman Christian Standard)   There is something magical about the beginning of a new season of Major League baseball.

Hard Headed

Hard Headed

“He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding.” – Proverbs 15:32 An officer in the navy had dreamed from childhood of commanding a great battleship one day. He finally achieved his dream and was given commission of the newest and proudest ship in the fleet. One stormy night, the captain was on duty on the bridge when he spotted a strange light rapidly closing with his own vessel.

Hand and Glove

Hand and Glove

“Remain in Me, and I in you, just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me.” – John 15:4 Do you remember your first new baseball glove? Mine was a “genuine” Tony Taylor that I purchased when I was eight years old. It was awesome!

Impact

Impact

“I, therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthy of the calling you have received." – Ephesians 4:1 "I have come to a frightening realization. I am the decisive element on the track or on the field. It is my personal approach that creates the climate for learning and personal performance.

No Man's Land

No Man's Land

“So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot or cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” – Revelation 3:16 How many of you grew up with Wheaties, the cereal advertised as the “Breakfast of Champions?” When an athlete’s picture landed on the front of the Wheaties box, you knew he or she had arrived. You may not know, but Wheaties has fallen on hard times lately. There are always reasons why products lose favor in a fickle market, but industry insiders say the reason is simple.

New Devotion by Charles Gee

All coaches understand the call to “Huddle Up.” Though not everyone coaches on the field, court, or diamond, most of us gather to share ideas, address challenges, or plan strategies. In the corporate world, it’s a staff meeting. In the military, a briefing. When parents want to clear the air, it’s a family conference. We’re all coaching in some way, and there will always be a time to “Huddle Up.”

The Christ- centered principles in these studies help coaches and competitors reconnect, refocus, and reboot to meet daily challenges.

Charles Gee is Chaplain for the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association and has served with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for over 15 years. Drawing from personal coaching experiences, he writes weekly devotions encouraging coaches to use their platform to impact lives for Jesus Christ (scfcacoaches.org). A retired Master Sergeant from the U.S. Army Reserves, Charles lives in Mt. Pleasant, SC, with Kathy, his wife of 52 years. He has two sons, Jeff and Chris, two daughters- in-law, Kristin and Megan, and three amazing, competitive grandchildren.
